Intumescent coating is a popular method of providing passive fire protection to load-bearing materials, particularly structural steel, in current architectural design for industrial and commercial buildings.
How long do intumescent coatings last?
Intumescent coatings typically last 10 to 15 years. Under the right conditions, certain coatings can last up to 20 years. To maintain durability, periodic inspections, and maintenance checks are required for all types of coatings.
What material is intumescent?
Intumescent fireproofing methods are primarily based on ammonium polyphosphate (an acid source), melamine and its derivatives (blowing agents), and pentaerythritol derivatives, which are commonly utilized as char-producing agents. A competent intumescent system can extend 50-200 times its original thickness.
